  1. Joy says:

I have always felt physicians especially residents were over worked. The hours are not fit for a slave. It reminds me of endentured servitude. A resident could be in his residency 3 or more years. That is a lot of time to lack sleep. Doctors of all people should know what healthy habits are and that this is not good for their health. Physical and mental health. Changes need to be made to protect the new doctor and the public who may suffer because of a mistake made by them due to sleep deprivation. Why is it so difficult to change the way we do medicine?

    • Pamela Wible MD says:

Quite simply there is too much profit being made by mistreating these bright compassionate people. A dysfunctional medical system can only exist on the backs of a disempowered physician population—the precursor of which is an abused medical student population.

  2. Laura Knee says:

Amen! I’m a Nurse Practitioner and experience the same thing. I’ve repeatedly remarked about how hypocritical medicine is and that I’m not able to practice the way I was taught or called to practice. I’ve felt powerless as a midlevel provider and against big hospital/corporate entities that want to run us into the ground and don’t care about quality patient contact. I recently left my job in the ER and am doing contract work at different clinics trying to figure out the next step. It’s so great to hear there are other providers taking their lives back too!
